Campaigners of the minor political part, Swaraj India, chose a gruesome method to attract attention to the misery of farmers who have killed themselves. As the video above shows, they strung up effigies of farmers hanging from nooses on New Delhi’s ITO flyover, to be seen by thousands of commuters passing by.

The protests are justified. More than 12,000 farmers have committed suicide every year in India since 2013. A banner said that the effigies were symbolic of three lakh farmers who have killed themselves.

The All India Kisan Sangharsh Coordination Committee (AIKSCC) has organised another protest outside the Parliament on 20 November. The organisation has been fighting for loan waivers and remunerative prices for farmers, and they are aghast at what they term government apathy towards the country’s farmers.
