A re-mastered version of James Cameron’s global blockbuster Titanic will be released in select theatres in the United States of America to mark its 20th anniversary. Dolby Laboratories, Paramount Pictures and 20th Century Fox have made the re-release possible, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The Oscar-winning movie stars Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio as passengers on board the passenger liner RMS Titanic that sank after hitting an iceberg on April 15, 1912. Over 1,500 people are estimated to have died.
Cameron’s version of the tragedy was first released on December 19, 1997, and “remains the No. 2 top-grossing film of all time ($2.19 billion) behind Cameron’s Avatar, not accounting for inflation,” The Hollywood Reporter said.
The re-mastered film will be shown in 2D and 3D in 87 theaters for a one-week run from December 1. Cameron said in a statement, “This is beyond 3D, beyond 70mm, it’s beyond anything you’ve ever seen before.”
A 3D version was reissued in 2012, and proved to be immensely popular across the world.
