Nathan Lyon may have held up losses for his team with his bowling, but this time the Australian literally held up a win for New South Wales in Sheffield Shield match thanks to his less-than proficient skills in the kitchen.
As NSW were on course for a comfortable win when off went the fire alarms and stopped play for over 30 minutes in the match against Queensland at Allan Border Field in Brisbane on Wednesday. Players had to leave the field and weren’t allowed into the dressing rooms, where the smoke was coming from. The players included Steve Smith, Usman Khawaja and David Warner, who waited on the field as two fire trucks arrived at the ground.
As it turns out, it was all because Lyon was first bored, probably hungry, then dissatisfied and ultimately distracted by the cricket and therefore burnt a piece of toast.
“[The toast] popped up first and I wasn’t happy so I put it back down and I got carried away watching the cricket,” Lyon was quoted as saying on Cricket Australia’s website. “I was getting a bit bored in the changerooms,” he added.
And if anyone is wondering whether this was an accident or a general lack of culinary skills, the answer is the latter. “It happens every second week [at home], I reckon,” he said.
However, Lyon doesn’t have to worry about the consequences for holding up an entire match, as national captain Smith is going to pay for the fire trucks. “Steve Smith already said he’s going to cover it [the fire truck call-out fee,]” he said.
Thankfully the match was restarted soon after and NSW went on to notch a six-wicket victory. As for Lyon, he has added his name to a very bizarre list of reasons to hold up play and made for some very funny tweets.
Nice, Gary!
