Schools in Chennai, as well as in the districts of Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur, will remain closed on Monday, after the India Meteorological Department warned of a heavy spell of rain, The Times of India reported. Chennai’s Nungambakkam observatory recorded 6.6 cm of rain between 8.30 am on Sunday and 5.30 am on Monday.
Ennore, near Chennai, recorded the highest rainfall of 11 cm in the last 24 hours, ending 8.30 am on Monday, Firstpost reported.
“It has been raining continuously in Chennai due to the northeast monsoon,” Chennai District Collector V Anbuselvan said. “Considering the students’ welfare, schools will be closed on Monday.”
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami on Sunday said there was no water-logging in Chennai, reported NDTV. “The inundation was mainly in low-lying areas,” he said. “The Rs 434-crore storm water drain project [former Chief Minister] J Jayalalithaa had launched is nearing completion.”
Earlier this month, at least 14 people died in rain-related incidents when heavy showers lashed Tamil Nadu.
