Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday called the incident of a Mumbai police officer towing a car with a woman breastfeeding her seven-month-old inside “absolutely insensitive and dangerous”, ANI reported.
The officer has been suspended. A video of the incident, which took place on SV Road in Malad, had gone viral on Saturday.
“Prima facie inquiries indicate that the constable, Shashank Rane, displayed a total lack of sensitivity and endangered the safety of the woman and her child,” Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Amitesh Kumar was quoted as saying by The Hindu. “He has been placed under suspension and an inquiry has been initiated.”
The video showed the woman sitting inside her white car with her seven-month-old child when the towing van picks it up and starts moving. The woman was seen pleading with the towing officer – a traffic policeman who was not wearing his name badge. Reports said several people also asked Rane to stop towing the car, but he continued speaking on his mobile phone.
