Poachers killed an adult rhinoceros and chopped off its horn at the Kaziranga National Park in Assam, PTI reported on Friday. The animal had been killed on Wednesday, Kaziranga National Park Divisional Forest Officer Rohini Ballav Saikia said.
The carcass of the male rhinoceros was found near Bokpara camp under Kohora range on Thursday, Saikia said. He added that a huge cache of arms and ammunition was recovered from the Kaziranga National Park, and is believed to belong to the poachers. The accused allegedly fled with the animal’s horns. A search operation is on to trace the poachers.
This is the third reported incident of rhinoceros being killing in Kaziranga this month. Two adult rhinoceroses and one calf were gunned down by poachers in the park in 48 hours since November 2 in two separate incidents. In both cases, the animals’ horns had been chopped off and stolen.
