United States President Donald Trump on Friday commended India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the country’s “astounding growth”. He made the statement on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Vietnam, PTI reported.

“Since India opened its economy, it has achieved astounding growth and is a new world of opportunity for its expanding middle class,” Trump told a gathering of chief executive officers in Vietnam’s Danang city. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been working to bring that vast country and all of its people together as one, and he’s working at it very, very successfully, indeed.”

Modi is scheduled to leave for the Philippines on Sunday to attend the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Summit and the East Asia summit.

Earlier in the day, Trump pushed for freedom of trade and economic openness in the Indo-Pacific region. He also warned that the US would no longer “tolerate chronic trade abuses”.
