A 22-year-old woman who had been kept chained by her family in Telangana’s Jagtial town was rescued with the help of her neighbours on Wednesday, the Hindustan Times reported on Thursday, quoting the police. The woman’s family claimed she is mentally unstable, and they kept her locked away because she threw stones at people sometimes.

Neighbours found the woman, Chityala Geetha, crying in front of the house on Wednesday evening. She told them that her brothers and sisters-in-law had tortured her, according to the report.

The neighbours took her to the Jagtial Police Station and got her chains removed. The police then called her brothers, who said Geetha had been mentally unsound since childhood.

The police will send the woman to a hospital for a mental check-up. District Superintendent of Police Ananta Sarma said she will be admitted to the State Home for Women and Child Welfare in Hyderabad if they find that her family tortured her.

The police have filed a case under Section 341 (punishment for wrongful restraint) of the Indian Penal Code, ANI reported.
