The Guwahati Police on Tuesday arrested the director of the Assam government’s Directorate of Information and Public Relations in connection with a scam involving around Rs 32 crore, PTI reported.
The officer in-charge of Chief Minister’s Special Vigilance Cell, Jyotirmoy Chakravarty, said that Ranjit Gogoi was produced in a court on Tuesday, and was remanded in their custody for three days.
The police had recently filed a complaint against Gogoi and several businessmen and their firms for alleged corruption in a publicity campaign. “In total, there are five names in the First Information Report, which is just the beginning of the investigation,” Chakravarty said, adding that more names can come up during investigation.
There were alleged irregularities in the funds used for putting up hoardings across the state as part of the multi-media campaign, “Vision Assam Mission Assam” in the run up to the 2016 Assembly elections. The firms were reportedly paid even though the hoardings were not put up in many places.
There are also allegations against the previous Congress-led government in the state that had appointed Gogoi.
