At least 27 people were killed in Vietnam by Sunday morning, a day after Typhoon Damrey made landfall and damaged over 40,000 homes, Reuters reported. Twenty-two people are missing.
Battle tanks were mobilised to assist rescue efforts as heavy rain coupled with strong winds lashed the coast. Over 600 houses collapsed entirely, forcing more than 30,000 people to be evacuated, the Steering Committee for Disaster Prevention said.
Danang, which will host a summit of Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation later this week, also suffered losses when a gateway with “Welcome to Danang” written on it collapsed. United States President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese Presiden Xi Jinping are due to attend the event from November 10.
The typhoon also damaged more than 40,000 hectares of crops, the government said on Saturday.
