Google on Sunday marked the 90th birth anniversary of Japanese statistician Hirotugu Akaike with a doodle. Born on November 5, 1927, Akaike is credited with the formulation of the “Akaike information criterion”, which helps predict which statistical model out of many will be the closest to the actual truth.
He devised the method after two decades of research, which he began in the 1950s. In 2006, Akaike received the Kyoto Prize for his contributions to statistical science. He died in August 2009.
The doodle will appear to users in Argentina, Australia, Belarus, Cuba, Estonia, Greece, Iceland, India, Japan, New Zealand, Peru, Portugal and Sweden.
The doodle has Akaike’s sketch with a graph showing statistical curves and approximations of mathematical functions in the background.
