German car manufacturer BMW has recalled over one million vehicles in North America that contain parts that can catch fire, ABC News reported.
The automobile company, Autoweek reported, issued two recalls – the first involving 7,40,000 vehicles from the 1, 3 and 5-Series lineups, along with the BMW Z4, X3 and X5, and the second recall covers about 6,73,000 cars from the 2006-2011 3-Series.
The first recall was a result of defective valve heaters that can cause fires in stationary vehicles. The heater prevents the valve from freezing in cold temperatures, BMW spokesperson Hector Arellano-Belloc was quoted as saying by AP. But manufacturing defects can cause it to corrode, leading to overheating.
The second defect is a result of faulty wiring for the heating and air conditioning systems that can cause connectors to melt.
BMW advised people to park the cars outside till repairs begin on December 18.
