The Centre told the Supreme Court on Friday that it will not take legal action against 14 petitioners who moved court after they could not deposit Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes after they were demonetised, The Times of India reported. However, the government said they will not be prosecuted only for the amount they mentioned in their petitions.
The court allowed the 14 petitioners to argue their case before the Constitution bench, which is hearing a plea challenging the validity of demonetisation.
Sudha Misra, who is one of the petitioners, delivered two babies prematurely on November 4, 2016, four days before the Centre announced the demonetisation exercise. She told the court that she could not deposit her old currency notes by December 31 because of her health, the Hindustan Times reported.
