The Delhi Police arrested a 33-year-old man for allegedly sexually assaulting an 18-month-old toddler in outer Delhi’s Aman Vihar, PTI reported on Friday.
On Wednesday, the girl had gone to play at her neighbour’s house when the incident occurred, police said. While his wife went to the terrace, the accused raped the girl in front of his two children – a four-year-old son and a two-year-old daughter.
About an hour later, her mother found her bleeding and complaining of pain. She immediately rushed her daughter to the hospital, where doctors complained to the police. She had to undergo an emergency surgery, police said, adding that she is now out of danger.
The man, identified, as printing press employee Rakesh, was arrested on Thursday, the Hindustan Times reported. He confessed to the crime during an interrogation, police said.
“We zeroed in on Rakesh after making inquiries in the locality,” Outer Delhi’s Deputy Commissioner of Police MN Tiwari was quoted as saying. “Based on the medical report and a statement from her family members, we registered a case of rape under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act,” he added.
If found guilty, the accused could face a jail term of seven years to life imprisonment.
