Schools and colleges will remain closed in Chennai for the third day on Thursday as the India Meteorological Department has forecast more rain in the state, The Times of India reported on Wednesday. According to the weatherman, most parts of South Tamil Nadu, north coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and a few places in the northern interiors will receive showers on Thursday.
Three officials of the electricity board were suspended after two girls were electrocuted on Tuesday. They had stepped on a live wire that had fallen out of a junction box in Chennai’s Kodungaiyur area.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami announced compensation of Rs 3 lakh for the families of both girls, ANI reported. The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board will also give each family Rs 2 lakh.
“The incident happened around 1.30 pm,” Kodungaiyur Police Inspector Pugazhendi told The News Minute. “The children died immediately after being electrocuted. Locals of the area started protesting against the electricity department, but we convinced them to stop the protest and promised that action will be taken.”
Pugazhendi said the bodies of the two children had been sent for an autopsy, and the police have launched an inquiry into their deaths.
At least six people have died in rain-related incidents across Tamil Nadu since heavy showers lashed the state. The downpour has affected the districts of Kanchipuram and Tiruvallur, among other parts of Tamil Nadu, and schools in Chennai, Kanchipuram and Tiruvallur districts have been closed since Tuesday.
