A newly restored version of James Ivory’s Shakespeare Wallah (1965) will have limited re-releases in New York City and Los Angeles in November and December. The Merchant Ivory production is among 30 films from the production company that are being restored and re-released by the Cohen Media Group. Twenty-one feature films and nine short films and documentaries will undergo the restoration process. Ivory is serving as the creative director of the initiative.
Shakespeare Wallah is based on the Kendal family and follows a travelling troupe of Shakespearean actors who perform across towns in 1960s post-colonial India. Led by Tony (Geoffrey Kendal), the troupe soldiers on despite dwindling audiences. Felicity Kendal plays the young actor who falls in love with Sanju (Shashi Kapoor), who is courting a film actor (Madhur Jaffrey).
The re-release comes with a brand new poster.
