BBC’s three-episode historical thriller Gunpowder has been picked up by HBO for telecast in December. Starring Game of Thrones star Kit Harington, Gunpowder follows the events leading to the failed Gunpowder Treason Plot of 1605, in which a group of Catholics led by Robert Catesby (Harington) tried to assassinate King James I of England.
The British series, currently airing on BBC One in the United Kingdom, also stars Liv Tyler and screenwriter Mark Gatiss. Tom Cullen plays Guy Fawkes, the most infamous member of Catesby’s group. The show has received mostly positive reviews, though its violent depictions of torture have made certain viewers queasy.
