A Pakistan court on Thursday issued a bailable arrest warrant against ousted Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in connection with two corruption cases, Dawn reported. The warrants were issued reportedly because Sharif failed to show up for the hearing.
The cases are related to the allegations that surfaced against Sharif after the Panama Papers leak in April 2016. The court had charged Sharif for holding assets disproportionate to his known sources of income, in a case filed by the National Accountability Bureau.
Sharif’s lawyer had filed an application, seeking to be exempted from attending hearings for a week. It was, however, rejected by the court. Sharif is in London where his wife Kalsum is undergoing treatment for cancer.
Sharif’s daughter Maryam Nawaz and her husband Captain (retired) Safdar were present at the accountability court in Islamabad on Thursday. The three were indicted by the court last week over allegations linked to ownership of expensive apartments in London.
The hearing in another case of corruption, in which he was indicted by the court on October 19, will continue on November 3, according to Dawn.
