The world will get “toasted, roasted and grilled” if it does not make “critical decisions” soon on climate change, International Monetary Fund Managing Director Christine Lagarde said on Tuesday.
She predicted “deep trouble” and a dark future in 50 years’ time if two key concerns – climate change and inequality – are not addressed. She said inequality between men and women, the rich and the poor and among countries needed to be bridged.
“If we do address these issues, it might look better – it might look different,” Lagarde said.
The IMF chief made the statement during a session at the Future Investment Initiative in Riyadh. She praised Saudi Arabia for its recent efforts on gender equality. In September, King Salman issued a royal decree to allow women to drive in the country for the first time. The order will come into force by June 30, 2018.
“We have some critical decisions to make, if we want that future in 50 years’ time to look like utopia rather than dystopia,” she said.
