The vice chancellor of Mumbai University was sacked on Tuesday after an unprecedented delay in declaring examination results and other reports of goof-ups, reported Firstpost. Maharashtra Governor C Vidyasagar Rao removed Sanjay Deshmukh from the post for gross negligence, failing to implement the On-Screen Marking system and delaying the results by more than three months.
Devanand Shinde, the vice chancellor of Shivaji University in Kolhapur, will serve as the acting VC of Mumbai University, reported The Indian Express. The state government will now form a search committee to initiate the process of appointing a new vice chancellor.
Evaluations were delayed this year after the varsity switched to an online system. Even after the results were declared in August, many students had reported miscalculations. Almost 50,000 students had requested revaluation, according to Times Now.
On July 28, the Maharashtra government had ordered an investigation into Deshmukh’s role in implementing the new online assessment system, which has caused the delay in announcing the results. Deshmukh was sent on leave in August after widespread protests against his decision to overhaul the entire assessment system at one go. The clamour for Deshmukh’s resignation slowly gained momentum. On September 26, Rao had sought his resignation, failing which he could face dismissal, The Times of India had reported.
