Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje-led government on Monday tabled the controversial bill that proposes to shield both serving and former judges, magistrates and public servants from being investigated for on-duty action without its prior sanction.
The The Criminal Laws (Rajasthan Amendment) Bill, tabled by Home Minister Gulabchand Kataria, was met with protests within the Assembly House and outside, PTI reported. Bharatiya Janata Party MLAs Ghanshyam Tiwari and Narpat Singh Rajvi too came out in opposition against their government’s proposal.
Jaipur Police temporarily detained Rajasthan Congress President Sachin Pilot and several party leaders after they participated in a protest against the bill, PTI reported. “We will not let the government pass the bill,” Pilot told reporters.
Raje is believed to have directed her Cabinet to reconsider the bill, News18 reported.
The bill also proposes to ban the media from naming the public servant till the government allows a case to be investigated. A petition has challenged the Ordinance in the Rajasthan High Court, the Hindustan Times reported.
