The Visakhapatnam Police arrested a truck cleaner for allegedly raping a woman on the footpath of a busy road on Sunday afternoon. People shot videos of the crime and walked past it, but did nothing to stop the man, reports said.

The crime took place at the city’s New Railway Colony around 2.30 pm, the Hindustan Times reported. The police said the man, Ganji Siva, was drunk. He was arrested in the evening.

The woman had left home after a fight with her family, Visakhapatnam IV town police sub-inspector K Suresh told the newspaper. Suresh said the woman had not eaten for hours and was too weak to scream for help. “Siva attacked her when she was sleeping on the footpath under a tree,” he said.

An autorickshaw driver shot a video of the incident and reported it to the police. Officials who saw the video told The Indian Express that the police control room got at least six calls from the spot, but other than that, passersby did nothing to stop the rape. The woman was taken to a hospital for a medical examination.
