Qualifier Saurav Ghosal came up with another impressive performance to upset eighth seed Mohamed Abouelghar of Egypt 11-9, 5-11, 8-11, 11-3, 11-8 in an hour and eight minutes to reach the semi-finals of the Channel VAS Championships at St George’s Hill on Friday.
The 31-year-old Ghosal came back from a 1-2 deficit to get the better of his Egyptian opponent and would now clash with his compatriot and World No.3 Mohamed ElShorbagy in what would be his first last four appearance in a PSA M100 category tournament.
According to reports on squashsite.co.uk, Ghosal showed the tenacity to keep pace with Abouelghar through out the 68 minute encounter and managed to slow down the pace of the game considerably in the fourth and fifth set to turn the tables on his much higher ranked opponent, who had defeated him rather easily a three weeks ago in Macau.
“I’m happy to beat someone like Abou, especially after I lost 3-0 to him in Macau three weeks ago. He’s been playing really well over the past 12/18 months and he’s played really well against the top guys, so to back up what I did against Marwan the other day and to beat someone of his calibre is pleasing,” Ghosal was quoted as saying on the official website.
