Students at Oxford University’s St Hugh’s College, where Nobel Peace Prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi studied, voted on Thursday to remove her name from its junior common room, the BBC reported. They said her response as Myanmar’s de facto leader to the Rohingya crisis was “inexcusable”.
As state counsellor, Suu Kyi has been criticised by world leaders and human rights organisations for doing little to stop the alleged “ethnic cleansing” of Rohingya Muslims in the country’s Rakhine State.
The Aung San Suu Kyi junior common room will now be “unnamed” with immediate effect, the motion by a students’ committee said. The motion criticised her “silence and complicity” in the matter.
Suu Kyi had graduated from St Hugh’s College in 1967.
Earlier this month, she lost her “Freedom of Oxford” title conferred by the Oxford City Council, on similar grounds. The council voted unanimously to take away the honour.
