A case was filed on Friday against eight people after a 54-year-old man in Bihar’s Nalanda district was allegedly made to lick his own saliva off the floor as punishment for entering the village head’s house without knocking, ANI reported.

A special team is conducting raids and arrests are likely soon, Nalanda Superintendent of Police Sudhir Porika said. Earlier, the Bihar administration had ordered an investigation into the incident.

The administration had taken suo motu cognisance of the incident after videos of the act were circulated. The clips also showed some women beating the man, Mahesh Thakur, with slippers.

The incident took place in Ajaipur village of Noorsarai block in Nalanda, the home district of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

Thakur, who belongs to the barber community, had gone to Sarpanch Surendra Yadav’s house on Wednesday night for tobacco, but there were no men in the house at that time, Nalanda District Magistrate SM Thiyagarajan told The Times of India. However, Zee News reported that he had gone there to avail a government scheme.

State Cabinet minister Nand Kishore Yadav condemned the incident. “Such incidents will not be tolerated, and we will take strict action against the culprits,” he told ANI, adding that those responsible will be booked.
