Actor Kamal Haasan, who in September announced he will enter politics, on Wednesday apologised for supporting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s demonetisation decision earlier. He now said Modi should accept that the note ban was a mistake, IANS reported.
In an article in Tamil magazine Vikatan, the actor said accepting and correcting mistakes was a mark of great leaders. “If the PM accepts his mistake, my salaam (salute) awaits him,” he said, according to NDTV. In the article, titled “A big apology”, Haasan said he owed it to the people “to apologise for supporting the plan in a hurry”.
Haasan’s current stance marks a big change from what he had said when the government had discontinued the Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes in November 2016. At that time, the actor had said on Twitter: “Salute Mr Modi. This move has to be celebrated across political party lines. Most importantly by earnest tax payers.”
“Initially I thought people should bear with minor irritants as the goal was to eradicate black money,” he said on Wednesday. But after his friends and those who understand economics criticised him for supporting demonetisation, he said he realised the note ban’s implementation was wrong.
