Unidentified men shot dead folk singer Harshita Dahiya in Chamrara village of Haryana’s Panipat district on Tuesday evening. The police have registered a case of murder against unknown people and said that an investigation is under way.
Dahiya was attacked while she was returning to Delhi with three others from a programme in Chamrara. “When she was returning, a black car overtook her vehicle near Chamrara and forced it to stop,” Panipat Deputy Superintendent of Police Desh Raj told PTI.
The assailants asked the other three to get out of the vehicle, after which they fired six shots at Dahiya before fleeing. The singer died on the spot.
The police suspect that the 22-year-old was killed because of personal enmity. Panipat Superintendent of Police Rahul Sharma told the Hindustan Times that Dahiya had filed a complaint of rape against her brother-in-law, who was jailed. Dahiya’s sister Lata alleged that her husband killed the singer because she was a witness in their mother’s murder.
In a video the singer shared on social media recently, she alleged that she was getting death threats, according to NDTV.
Dahiya was a resident of Narela in Delhi.
