In 2016, Najeeb Ahmed, a student at Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru University, was apparently spotted getting into an autorickshaw on the campus on October 15, and has not been seen ever since. More than a year later, the authorities are nowhere closer to finding him.

Najeeb’s mother Fatima Nafees, along with about 30 other people were protesting outside the Delhi High Court and were caught on camera (above) being forcefully evicted from the premises. The video shows the Delhi Police dragging Najeeb’s mother into a police van, while she can be heard screaming and resisting the action, and was reportedly taken to Tilak Marg police station.

While police claimed they were detained because they were demonstrating at a place where protests were not permitted, Nafees’ relatives said the detention was unprovoked.

“Nearly 35 people including Najeeb’s mother have been detained,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) B K Singh said. Earlier in the day, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) was subject to intense criticism from the judges for “complete lack of interest” in tracing Najeeb.
