A woman was injured at Elphinstone Road station in Mumbai on Friday afternoon after a ceiling tile from the foot-over bridge fell on her head, the Hindustan Times reported. The incident comes a little over two weeks after 23 people died in a stampede near the station on September 29.
The incident took place when 38-year-old Anita Basak was at the station’s ticket window. A 7-inch-long piece of the false ceiling fell on Basak’s head, injuring her. “A woman constable rushed Basak to the KEM hospital, where she received four stitches,” Mumbai Government Railway Police senior inspector Dattaray Pawar told the English daily.
“She had no major injuries,” KEM Hospital Dean Dr Avinash Supe said. “Her CT scan and X-ray reports showed no major complications. She is stable and being treated for her injuries.”
The Western Railways had cleared its officials and blamed rain, panic and rumours for the stampede between Mumbai’s Elphinstone Road and Parel railway stations, The Indian Express reported. The report had also recommended several measures including relocating the booking counter, regulating vendors’ entry during rush hours, installing additional CCTV cameras, and setting up a hotline facility at stations to prevent such incidents in the future.
