The Uttar Pradesh government on Saturday renamed the Mughalsarai railway station to Deen Dayal Upadhyay station, The Indian Express reported. An unidentified government official told The Indian Express that the move to rename the station is a bid by the Adityanath government to revive the legacy of Jan Sangh leader Deen Dayal Upadhyay, who died at the station in 1968.

The Ministry of Home Affairs had on August 3 cleared a proposal by the UP government seeking to honour the freedom fighter. The Opposition had on August 4 protested against the Centre’s decision. Proceedings in the Rajya Sabha were adjourned for 10 minutes, as Samajwadi Party leader Naresh Agarwal issued a notice under Rule 267 seeking the suspension of Parliament business to start a discussion on the matter.

Samajwadi Party members protested in the Well of the House. The party members claimed that the station was being renamed after someone who had made “no contribution to the freedom struggle”. Deputy Chairman PJ Kurien had dismissed the notice.
