Two militants, believed to be part of the Lashker-e-Taiba, were gunned down on Saturday morning during an encounter in Litter village of Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama district, the police said. One civilian was killed and another injured during the crossfire, Inspector General (Jammu and Kashmir) Munir Khan said.
The security forces found one AK-47, one AK-56 and six AK magazines from the militants who were identified as Wasim Shah and Hafiz Nisar, ANI reported.
Security forces received specific inputs about militants’ presence in Litter, after which the area was cordoned off. Teams from the Rashtriya Rifles, the Central Reserve Police Force and the Jammu and Kashmir Police surrounded the militants who were hiding in the village, said Director General of Police (J&K) SP Vaid. An encounter ensued after the militants started firing on the security forces, according to The Times of India.
Khan said Wasim Shah used to recruit cadres for the LeT. “Shah was very notorious and his elimination was a big success,” Khan told reporters. “Both the terrorists were first asked to surrender, but instead they started firing. The troops then retaliated and gunned them down.”
Meanwhile, clashes broke out between the security forces and protestors in Pulwama after the encounter during which incidents of stone pelting were reported, according to ANI.
