At least 37 people were killed and another 40 were missing after heavy rain caused floods in Vietnam, Reuters reported on Thursday. Twenty-one people were injured in landslides, officials said.
The administration had to release water from dams in the region, the Central Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control said. More than 17,000 homes have been evacuated and 200 homes collapsed in rain-related incidents. Around 18,000 other houses were submerged or damaged.
The committee said more than 8,000 hectares of land used for growing rice were ruined and around 40,000 animals were killed or washed away.
The country’s long coastline makes it vulnerable to storms and flooding. In 2016, more than 200 people were killed in storms alone.
