Bollywood actor Anupam Kher on Wednesday was appointed the new chairman of the Film and Television Institute of India. He will succeed television actor Gajendra Chauhan in the post.
The FTII chairman usually holds office for three years. But Chauhan held the position for only a year and seven months as he was appointed to the post in June 2015 in retro effect from March 2014. The post had been vacant since his term at the Pune institute, mired in controversy, ended in March.
Kher has previously been the chairman of the Central Board of Film Certification and the National School of Drama. He was honoured with the Padma Shri in 2004 and the Padma Bhushan in 2016.
The actor has starred in Bollywood and international films as well as in several plays. He appeared in 2013 Oscar-winning film Silver Linings Playbook.
