After the successful staging of the Beauty and the Beast musical in 2015, Disney India will bring the Broadway version of Aladdin in 2018. The studio will be issuing a licence to a yet-to-be-named local producer to stage the musical for Indian audiences.
“After the unprecedented success of our first ever Broadway-style musical, ‘Beauty and the Beast’, we are thrilled to announce our next offering - Disney’s Aladdin,” said Vikrant Pawar, Head Live Entertainment & Local Content Studio, Disney India in a press release. “We feel Disney’s Aladdin has a universal appeal and the musical will bring the magical story alive, making it truly memorable for our audiences here.”
Auditions have begun for the Indian production of the stage musical.
The original musical, which was premiered in Seattle in 2011, had music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Howard Ashman, Tim Rice and Chad Beguelin. Based on the 1992 animated film, Aladdin follows a street urchin who is granted three wishes by a genie from a magic lamp.
