The twitter-sphere world went on a frenzy at the end of India’s second Fifa U-17 World Cup match, which saw them go down fighting to Colombia 1-2 on Monday.
Jeakson Singh’s goal, which at the time levelled scores in the game, may have just made many an adult’s eyes moist. After all, who could have imagined this: An Indian, in a Fifa event, scoring a goal. In a game where Indians are written off in a physical battle even before a ball is kicked, the 16-year-old Manipuri slammed a thunderous header past the Colombian goalkeeper. The roof of the JLN Stadium almost went off with the deafening noise. However, their joy was short-lived as the South Americans netted the winner almost straight from kick-off.
Goalkeeper Dheeraj Singh Moirangthem was already marked out as one of India’s star players before the tournament. After a solid performance against USA, Dheeraj’s bravery and reflexes, even from point-blank range, stood out and was easily India’s Man-of-the-match by some distance.
Here is a pick of how the Twitter world reacted during and after the game.
Dheeraj came in for a lot of praise. There were comparisons (pretty serious ones) to World Cup winning goalkeepers Gianluigi Buffon and Manuel Neuer.
