The Communist Party of China on Sunday said nearly 1.34 million officials have been punished since 2013 under the anti-corruption campaign launched by President Xi Jinping, Reuters reported. Those punished include 6,48,000 village-level officials involved in small-scale corruption, and several high-ranking officials, the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection said.
The anti-corruption campaign was a core policy during Xi’s five-year term. The announcement comes ahead of the 19th Congress scheduled for October 18 where Xi is expected to be elected for a second-term, according to Reuters.
The Central Commission for Discipline Inspection said nearly 155,000 country-level party bureaus have set up corruption policing mechanisms. In August, the head of the anti-graft committee for China’s Ministry of Finance was put under investigation for alleged corruption.
