India’s Samiya Imad Farooqui reached the final of the Badminton Asia Junior Championships 2017 in the girls singles U-15 category with a convincing 21-9, 21-18 over compatriot Aashi Rawat in Yangon, Myanmar.
The all-Indian semi-final was over in 23 minutes as the third seed Farooqui booked her place in the summit clash against Indonesia’s Widjaja Stephani, who had defeated Gayatri Gopichand in the first round of the tournament.
Farooqui and Rawat were the only Indian singles players remaining in the tournament. The two Indians won their respective quarter-final matches in contrasting fashion on Friday to book their last-four spots. There were three Indians in the quarter-finals of the men’s singles U-15 category but all of them lost their matches on Friday.
Farooqui, in fact, is now the only Indian remaining in contention in Yangon after Ayush Raj Gupta and Shubham Patel lost in the men’s doubles U-15 category while Keyura Mopati and Kavipriya Selvam lost in the women’s doubles U17 category in the semifinals.
Farooqui’s final is on Sunday.
