Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday described the decisions made by the Goods and Services Tax Council on Friday as “Diwali”. “It was like Diwali on Friday when we made some important changes in the Goods and Services Tax,” Modi said, after laying the foundation stone for a bridge between Okha town and Bet Dwarka island in Gujarat, ANI reported.
On Friday, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had announced a slew of revisions in rules under the new indirect tax regime. “We had already said we would mend the loopholes in the Goods and Services Tax regime,” the prime minister said.
Attacking the Congress rule in Gujarat, which will hold Assembly elections later this year, Modi said: “When Madhavsinh Solanki [of the Congress] was chief minister, I recall front page advertisements for the chief minister coming to Jamnagar to inaugurate a water tank. This is how narrow their conception of development was.”
He claimed the state had come a long way since then and was looking at more “extensive” progress.
