Heavy rain lashed Mumbai on Friday evening after the sky suddenly turned dark around 4.30 pm, even as the city recorded an unusually high temperature yet again.
In its 2 pm update, the Meteorological Department’s 24-hour forecast predicted a maximum temperature of 36 degrees Celsius and more thundershowers till the night. Thundershowers are likely to continue till Sunday.
On Thursday, the city had recorded a maximum temperature of 34.7 degrees Celsius, three degrees above normal.
“There is a system in the Arabian Sea as well as the Bay of Bengal that is bringing in these showers,” said Ajaykumar, a scientist at IMD Mumbai. “However, this is a normal occurrence during the [monsoon] withdrawal phase.”
