INS Trishul on Friday thwarted an attempt by pirates to attack a cargo ship in the Gulf of Aden, said Captain DK Sharma, a spokesperson for the Indian Navy. The attack took place at 12.30 pm on MV Jag Amar, an 85,000-tonne bulk carrier registered in India that was headed to Jubail in Saudi Arabia.
The Indian Navy’s Marine Commando Force was on board the vessel when the pirates targeted it, The Hindu quoted Sharma as saying.
Search operations have been launched to trace at least 12 suspected pirates. One AK-47 magazine, 27 rounds, ladders and grapnels were recovered from the pirates, Captain Sharma said.
There were 26 crew members on board MV Jag Amar when the pirates attacked.
