The Gulf of Mexico is bracing for another hurricane – the National Hurricane Center on Wednesday reported a new tropical depression in the Caribbean. It is likely to cause storm and heavy rain in Nicaragua and Honduras by the end of the day and develop into a hurricane by the weekend.
The weather agency also asked residents along the Gulf Coast of the United States to keep an eye on the movement of the storm. It could become a hurricane by the weekend, though it is too early to predict the impact, the National Hurricane Center said.
The tropical depression is now spinning in the Caribbean Sea and is expected to move north into the Gulf of Mexico. An update at 11 am Eastern Time (8.30 pm IST) said the storm had winds of 35 miles per hour and was moving northwest.
A depression gets a name when its winds reach 39 miles per hour. The new system will be called Nate.
The development comes as the Caribbean is still reeling from the devastating impact of hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria. The storms destroyed large parts of several countries in the region.
