Several people were arrested after a Bharatiya Janata Party councillor was tied to a tree and beaten up in Gujarat’s Vadodara district on Tuesday, NDTV reported. The people, mostly slum dwellers, were angry after their homes were razed by the civic body without being given a notice.
There are contradictory figures as to how many people have been taken into custody. According to NDTV, 30 people were arrested while a local channel said 58 people had been arrested.
A video on the social media showed the councillor, Hasmukh Patel, with a torn shirt, as residents abuse him. The mob untied him from the tree when the police arrived, according to NewsX.
The residents’ anger was fuelled when Patel claimed he was not aware of the civic body’s action. The Vadodara municipal commissioner’s office had told the residents that Patel was informed about the razing.
