Violence broke out on Tuesday in Uttar Pradesh’s Allahabad district after Bahujan Samaj Party leader Rajesh Yadav was shot dead on Monday night, NDTV reported. Two buses were set on fire and a clinic was damaged as Bahujan Samaj Party supporters protested against the Uttar Pradesh Police. Several journalists were also attacked in the melee.
Yadav is believed to have gone to meet a friend on Monday night at Tara Chand hostel near Allahabad University where he had an altercation with some people, Hindustan Times reported. His friend Dr Mukul Singh told the police that Yadav was shot at in his stomach, and he died while being treated.
A case has been registered against unidentified people. Allahabad Superintendent of Police Siddharth Shankar Meena said empty cartridges were found in Yadav’s vehicle, according to the Hindustan Times.
Yadav had contested the Assembly elections from the Bhadohi constituency in Uttar Pradesh.
