For superstitious people in India, the cause of most problems can be narrowed down to one thing – nazar, the evil eye. If not nazar, a black cat must have crossed your path, or you must have clipped your nails at night, or opened your umbrella inside your house. However, nazar seems to be the king of superstitions.
But stand-up comedian Kenny Sebastian thinks differently. “It’s a very self-patting superstition,” he says about the beauty of nazar. ‘You’re doing very well, that’s why bad things are happening to you.’
Like the concept of “touch wood”, Sebastian thinks nazar, too, is a nice concept, though he doesn’t quite seem to understand it. He describes his baffling journey into the surprisingly complex yet commonly known world of nazar and getting rid of it.
