In the Mood for Love, Wong Kar-wai’s masterpiece on the unspoken passion and thwarted desire between neighbours in Hong Kong in the 1960s, has finally been restored. The spruced-up version will be the closing film at a retrospective of the director at the Lumiere Festival between October 14-18 in Lyon in France.
Wong will also be presented with the Lumiere Award 2017. All his major films will be screened, including his audacious debut As Tears Go By (1988), Days of Being Wild (1990), Chungking Express (1994), Happy Together (1997), 2046 (2004) and The Grandmaster (2013).
The filmmaker, who is set to direct a period drama for Amazon Prime Video, will also conduct a master class at the festival.
In the Mood for Love stars Tony Leung and Maggie Cheung as neighbours who are drawn together when they find out that their spouses are having an affair. The movie is renowned for its elliptical narrative style, production design, cinematography, performances and music. The restoration has been done by Wong’s company Jet Tone Films, The Criterion Collection and the Cineteca di Bologna.
