Indian tennis players made the most of their outing across tournaments this week. India swept the medals tally in tennis at the Asian Indoor Games in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, while in the Association of Tennis Professionals Challenger Tour, the country’s top-ranked singles players advanced into the further rounds.
Here’s a quick recap of Tuesday’s tennis action involving Indian players:
Asian Indoor Games
India won the gold and silver medals in the men’s singles event on Wednesday after Sumit Nagal defeated compatriot Vijay Sundar Prashanth in the final. Nagal won in straight sets 6-1, 6-1.
Earlier on Tuesday, the men’s doubles team of Vishnu Vardhan and Vijay won the gold medal on Tuesday beating the Hong Kong team of Chun Hun Wong and Hong Kit Wong. Vardhan and Natarajan won 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.
Meanwhile, the women’s doubles team of Ankita Raina and Prarthana Thombare had to settle for the silver medal after losing the final to Thailand’s Tamachan Momkoonthod and Varunya Wongteanchai. Raina and Thombare won the opening set, but their opponents came back strongly to subdue the Indians 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(5).
ATP Challengers
Indian No 3 Prajnesh Gunneswaran reached the pre-quarter-finals of the ATP Tiburon Challenger, in California on Tuesday. The 242nd ranked Indian defeated American Evan King in the first round in straight sets 6-2, 6-4. In the round-of-16, Gunneswaran will play American qualifier Delton Baughman. Baughman upset the seventh-seeded Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime in straight sets 6-2, 6-2.
The top-ranked Indian Ramkumar Ramanathan, however, suffered an unexpected upset in the first round in the tournament. The fifth seed, lost to German lucky loser Jan Choinski in straight sets 6-1, 6-2 in 61 minutes. Earlier on Monday, Ramanathan had reached a new career high by making his debut in the top-150 of the ATP men’s singles rankings.
