There is always pressure to innovate during the Navratri festivities, especially when it comes to the garba and dandiya. A group of youngsters from Surat have decided to try something different this year, adding their own, well, spin to the folk dance.
As choreographer Neena Modi told ANI, “The kids wanted to do something different, so they’ve prepared a jive garba on skates this time. It’s quite difficult. It has jumps, and the floors are different everywhere, so let’s see how they will manage. But they’ve worked very hard on this.”
And so, here’s dandiya on roller skates (above). It took the youngsters several months just to learn to balance themselves on skates, leave alone actually performing the dance with sticks. But now they’ve quite perfected the art. Smita Desai, one of the dancers, told ANI, “We’ve learnt to balance ourselves, so maybe we can try even more things now.”
