Hours after veteran actor Kamal Haasan met Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday, he told TV news channel India Today that he was entering politics. “It’s confirmed. I am entering politics, I want to be CM for the people of Tamil Nadu,” he told the news channel.

He has not yet announced a political party, though reports had suggested he would launch one by the end of this month.

On September 15, Haasan admitted he was likely join politics, but not with an existing party. “I don’t think my goals in politics can match the ideology of any political party,” he had said. Besides meeting Kejriwal, he had also met Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, though he clarified later that he would not join the Left.

Recently, Haasan has made several comments about the ongoing political turmoil in Tamil Nadu after former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa died. On August 15, he had criticised the state government and asked why nobody had demanded Chief Minister Palaniswami’s resignation over alleged corruption. He had added that his aim was for a better Tamil Nadu, and if the tools that must help achieve that – “the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and other political parties – are blunt, we must find others”.
