The Uttar Pradesh government has ordered an inquiry into the alleged involvement of a senior police officer in letting off Gopi Ghanshampura, the mastermind of the November 2016 Nabha jail break in Patiala, NDTV reported on Thursday.

The Punjab Police have alleged that an inspector general in the Uttar Pradesh Police took a bribe of Rs 45 lakh to release Ghanshampura, alias Gurpreet Singh Sekhon. The department also gave special agencies an audio recording as proof, according to The Times of India. Principal Secretary (home) Arvind Kumar, who confirmed that an inquiry would be conducted, said there was no confirmation about the name of the officer involved.

The Punjab police also claimed that the police officer struck the deal with the help of one Sandeep Tiwari alias Pintoo. The matter reportedly came to light after the Punjab Police arrested Pintoo and two others, and interrogated them.

In February, a Punjab counter-intelligence team along with the Patiala and Moga police hadarrested Ghanshampura, one of the six prisoners who escaped from the Patiala jail on November 27, 2016. Including Sekhon, police teams from across the the country have arrested three of the six prisoners who had escaped, including Khalistan Liberation Force chief Harminder Singh Mintoo.
