The state of California in the United States on Wednesday sued the Donald Trump administration over its plan to construct a wall along the country’s border with Mexico, Reuters reported.
The lawsuit was filed by California Attorney General Xavier Becerra and the California Coastal Commission in a San Diego court. It said that the wall violates federal environmental standards and the Constitution. The federal government is overstepping its authority by intruding on the state’s authority, it added. “No one gets to ignore the law. Not even the President of the United States,” Becerra said.
The suit asks that the administration not be allowed to build the wall till it complies with United States environmental laws like the National Environmental Policy Act, the Administrative Procedure Act and the Coastal Zone Management Act. It also asks the judge to issue an order so that the Department of Homeland Security does not waive any guidelines for the project.
This lawsuit comes just a few weeks after United States officials announced that they had awarded contracts to four companies to build prototypes for a wall along the Mexico border at $500,000 (approximately Rs 3.2 crore) each.
